Preview
After their shock 2-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday, Manchester City will be looking for a big reaction in this UEFA Champions League (UCL) clash with Club Brugge. They’ll be confident of getting it after blitzing their opponents on the road (5-1) just two weeks ago which added to their favorable record of six victories in seven prior clashes with Belgian opposition in European competition (L1).
Coming into this matchday, Pep Guardiola’s men are a point off top spot, with their defeat to Paris Saint-Germain (2-0) their only Group A blemish so far (W2). Either side of that blank, they bagged 11 goals with only Bayern Munich scoring more ahead of this round (12). Having also averaged three goals per game vs Belgian sides in Europe, another goal fest is likely here.
Club Brugge’s defeat to City was their only competitive loss across their last 11 encounters (W6, D4), therefore the mood in the camp should be high, especially considering they secured a standout 2-1 away win vs RB Leipzig when last on the road in this competition. However, they’ll have to snap a record of never beating an English opponent away from home in European competition if they’re to repeat that success here (D2, L11).
It’s easy to see why the visitors are heavy underdogs, yet there’s no denying that their European pedigree is improving. They’ve lost only two of their last nine UCL away matches (W3, D4) and after their win in Leipzig, have now scored exactly two goals in three of the last four.
Players to watch: Riyad Mahrez’s brace in the last H2H clash took his UCL Man City tally this season to three – two of which arrived in the five minutes before half-time. Brugge’s Hans Vanaken also boasts three UCL goals so far, two of which came before the 30th minute.
Hot stat: City are looking to avoid failing to score in three straight competitive games for the first time since March 2016.
