Sporting Lisbon head into this big UEFA Champions League (UCL) clash knowing a win is a must to keep the pressure on the top two in Group C and their hopes of progressing alive. Six consecutive wins in all competitions should give the Portuguese outfit the confidence needed, as they look to record back-to-back UCL wins for the first time since November 2014, excluding qualifiers.
The José Alvalade Stadium has, however, proven unkind to the ‘Lions’ on the continental stage lately, after losing heavily in their last two home European fixtures (4-1, 5-1). They haven’t suffered three home European defeats in succession since September 2007 though, and do own an undefeated record vs opponents Beşiktaş (W2, D1), securing an impressive 4-1 victory in the reverse fixture.
Beşiktaş are on course for the wooden spoon in Group C, having lost all their games thus far. They’ll be hoping to get on the board sooner rather than later, as a result here could provide an outside chance of finishing at least third and entering the UEFA Europa League, but with only two wins in their last eight matches in all competitions (D1, L5), their chances seem slim at best.
Their away form doesn’t offer much support either as the Turkish outfit have lost each of their last five games when the passports came out for European competition, conceding 16 times whilst scoring only four goals in response. Add to that only winning one of their last 11 European fixtures vs Portuguese opposition (D5, L5), and it could be a long layover for the Turks.
Players to watch: Sporting defender Sebastián Coates is proving his worth at both ends, scoring four goals in his last four appearances, while Beşiktaş’ captain Atiba Hutchinson has scored six of his last eight goals for the club in the second half.
Hot stat: Nine of the 12 goals seen in Sporting’s UCL games this season have come before half-time.
