Swiss champions Young Boys’ defeat at Atalanta in their last UEFA Champions League (UCL) outing ended a run of five straight wins in all competitions prior, and with a shock home draw to Swiss minnows Luzern at the weekend, they’ve now failed to win two out of three competitive matches for the first time since early August!
That said, they still remain undefeated at home throughout the entirety of the 2021/22 season (W6, D2), netting at least two goals in four victories from four home UCL games (including qualifiers), as they gun for a surprise progression from Group F. Having taken a point from their last home encounter with Spanish opposition (1-1 vs Valencia in the 2018/19 UCL), they appear well placed to emulate their heroic home defeat of Real Madrid from the 1986/87 edition here!
Villarreal earned their way into this group stage via a triumphant Europa League title win last season, despite finishing seventh in their 2020/21 La Liga campaign. With that in mind, the visitors were expected to struggle at this level of competition and have done just that result wise this group stage (D1, L1).
If games of football were 80 minutes, it would be an entirely different story for the Spanish side, who have dropped points due to conceding after the 80th minute in both UCL group stage matches so far, but also in two of their six most recent league fixtures! Considering Young Boys’ historic defeat of Manchester United during matchday one came via a 95th minute winner, Villarreal are going to have to be especially careful here.
Players to watch: Young Boys’ midfielder Moumi Ngamaleu has found the back of the net in four of his last ten competitive fixtures, while Villarreal’s Gerard Moreno boasts goals in six of his last ten UEFA appearances.
Hot stat: Both teams have scored in ten of Young Boys’ last 13 competitive outings.
