With three points after the opening two UEFA Champions League (UCL) rounds (W1, L1), Zenit St Petersburg now host a Juventus side they are yet to score against in two historical H2H meetings (D1, L1). To have any chance of progressing to the Round of 16 from a group that also features UCL champions Chelsea, they’ll most likely have to win this game. That obviously won’t be easy and any such win would mark their first consecutive UCL victories since 2015, when they won five in a row, after beating Malmö 4-0 last time out.
However, back-to-back 2-1 losses in the Russian Premier League has put Zenit on the back foot and means they are on the verge of losing three competitive matches in a row for the first time since last October. They’ve also lost seven of their previous nine UCL group matches and face a Juventus side who appear to be recovering after a poor start to the season.
Three straight 1-0 victories, including victory against Chelsea in the last UCL round, has helped Juventus form a five-game winning streak. The future looks much brighter then for boss Massimiliano Allegri – despite the split with his famous Italian actress girlfriend – after the club’s uncharacteristic five-match start to this season (W2, D1, L2).
Two straight clean sheet wins to start this UCL campaign means Juve have the chance to record three straight wins to open a group stage for the first time since 2018/19, when Allegri was also at the helm. A W7, D1 historical record against Russian sides in European competition, during which they scored 2.25 goals on average, points to that becoming a reality.
Players to watch: Alex Sutormin has scored each of his four competitive strikes for Zenit this term beyond the 75th minute, including his goal against Malmö. Similarly, each of Federico Chiesa’s last four goal contributions (2G, 2A) have come after the break, including a winner in Juventus’ last UCL match against Chelsea.
Hot stat: Juventus have been trailing at half-time in just one of their ten competitive matches this term (HT: W6, D3).
